RESEARCH
Recent research has highlighted the positive impact of establishing a morning routine, including the reduction of stress, increased energy, and improved productivity. While these benefits are significant, my personal motivation was to help feel grounded and grateful for my life before the daily grind took its toll. Consider the common habit of reaching for the phone immediately upon waking up. The barrage of visuals, words, and news disrupts our thoughts before we've had a chance to reflect on ourselves and how we are feeling. This immediate exposure to external stimuli primes our brains for distraction, setting the stage for a daylong battle. Dr. Ranjee Chatterjee underlines the importance of a morning routine devoid of these external influences. Such a routine helps to minimise the micro-doses of stress we encounter daily. While each stressor may seem small and insignificant on its own, the cumulative effect can significantly impact our morning mood and overall well-being throughout the day. BENEFITS OF A MORNING ROUTINE So, what are the benefits of establishing a morning routine? 1. Predictability: A morning routine makes the start of your day predictable. Following a sequence of actions that foster a sense of control, reduces opportunities for anxiety to take over. Knowing what to expect creates a comforting structure that helps set a positive tone for the day. 2. Sacred "Me Time": Creating a morning routine carves out sacred "me time." This is a precious period where you can process your thoughts upon waking. Instead of immediately succumbing to the demands of the external world, you give yourself the opportunity to reflect, plan, and set the tone for the day on YOUR terms. Incorporating activities like meditation, journaling, or simply enjoying a cup of coffee in silence can make this ‘me time’ particularly meaningful. It's a chance to nurture your mental and emotional well-being before the external pressures of the day take centre stage. FINAL THOUGHTS In conclusion, the impact of establishing a morning routine goes beyond the surface-level benefits of reduced stress and increased productivity. It becomes a transformative practice, offering a sense of control, fostering positivity, and creating a buffer against the external pressures that can easily derail our well-being. Taking the time to craft a morning routine tailored to your needs is an investment in yourself and your overall life satisfaction. Start small, be consistent, and witness the profound changes it can bring to your daily life. Will you make 2024 the year that you look to create your morning routine? How have I managed this?
